Villa de Merlo isn't just for resting while looking at the mountains; it's for walking them. Our foothill geography offers a network of natural trails that traverse molle forests, crystal-clear streams, and high-altitude viewpoints.
If you're someone who can't stay still and needs to connect with nature in motion, we've prepared this technical guide with the 4 trails you need to know, classified by difficulty level so you can choose your own adventure.
1. Family Level: Cerro de Oro Trail
If you're coming with kids or want a quiet walk to start the day, this is the ideal option.
Location: Starts near the Cerro de Oro Plaza.
Distance: 3,600 meters (one way).
Difficulty: Low. It's a gentle climb that takes you to an old water intake. The path is wide and friendly, perfect for chatting and enjoying the fresh air without getting too winded.
2. Explorer Level: Mogote Bayo Reserve
Located in Rincón del Este, this 330-hectare Provincial Reserve protects the ecotone between the forest and high-altitude grassland. Here you have options to choose from:
Via Crucis Trail: A low-medium difficulty route, ideal for quick panoramic views.
Trail to the Cross: For those who want to sweat a bit more. It's a constant climb that rewards with one of the most complete views of the Conlara Valley.
Key Fact: The reserve has park rangers and marked trails, making it very safe to go without a guide.
3. The House Neighbor: Peñón Colorado Viewpoint
This trail is special to us because we're neighbors. Located near Casino Dos Venados, this medium-difficulty trek takes you into the heart of the mountains.
Distance: 2,750 meters.
The Challenge: It has a constant ascent (+192 meters elevation gain), but the reward is reaching a natural viewpoint surrounded by abundant forest with views of the Arroyo del Tigre area.
Tip: Being so close to Solar de los Pájaros, you can do it at sunset and walk back to your country house before dark.
4. Adventure Level: Salto del Tabaquillo
It's "The Classic" of trekking in Merlo, but don't underestimate it.
Location: Flora and Fauna Reserve (Rincón del Este).
Distance: Approx. 6 km (round trip) - 3 to 4 hours.
Difficulty: Medium-High. The path requires climbing some rocks and crossing the stream, so athletic footwear is mandatory. The final reward is an 18-meter waterfall hidden in a humid, cool ravine, surrounded by a Tabaquillo forest (trees with reddish bark unique to the area).
The "After-Trekking": Recovery at Solar de los Pájaros
Any hiking lover knows that the best part of trekking is... taking off your shoes when you get back.
After walking 3 or 4 hours climbing mountains, your body asks for rest. And this is where Solar de los Pájaros makes a difference. You don't return to a closed hotel room; you return to your own private spa:
Hydrotherapy: Soak in the jacuzzi or private pool to loosen your leg muscles.
Hydration: Make yourself a fresh lemonade in your complete kitchen and drink it on the gallery looking at the hill you just climbed.
Come challenge the mountains. We'll take care of your rest.
